ep 67: The Six Principles of Sexual Health: Balancing Safety And Pleasure (with Doug Braun-Harvey)

What do you do after breaking a relationship agreement? How can we look at sex addiction through a new lens? What’s the difference between a “healthy sexuality” and “sexual health”?

This week our guest, Doug Braun-Harvey, answers these questions and more about what’s working in queer relationships.

The Growth Marriage

When it comes to sex, we put a lot of effort into avoiding anything that will make us uncomfortable. We make it a point to avoid things that go against our values, things we don’t know much about, or even just conversations that make us anxious. But avoiding “bad” or uncomfortable things doesn’t equate to “sexual health” just like avoiding disease doesn’t equate to physical health. So, today I’m bringing on Doug Braun-Harvey to talk to us about the process of developing sexual health. This process is also the key to creating deeply fulfilling sexual connection.

The Six Principles of Sexual Health: Treating Out of Control Sexual Behavior

A new video interview of Doug Braun-Harvey and Michael Vigorito on their sexual health approach to working with men concerned with out of control sexual behavior is an excellent 45 minute curriculum resource for undergraduate and graduate classrooms.  Sydney Australia relationship counselor Clinton Power interviews the authors on their book “Treating Out of Control Sexual Behavior: Rethinking Sex Addiction” and guides the discussion to address the development, implementation and key concepts for therapists interested in collaborating with clients to define and live their personal vision of sexual health. I encourage educators to review the interview as a new educational resource to engage students in exploring sexual health principles as a framework for responding to men concerned about their sexual behavior.

The Erotic Philosopher - Rethinking Sex Addiction - with Doug Braun-Harvey

Doug Braun-Harvey: The Sexual Lives of Men

“The erotic is expected to be sacrificed in the name of these cultural narratives,” says psychotherapist Doug Braun-Harvey. “And that’s a big conflict.” As a certified sex therapist, Braun-Harvey has focused on helping men with out-of-control sexual behavior or with what feel like uncontrollable urges. He believes that we shouldn’t look at sexual behavior as a disease or an addiction. And that oftentimes, a man’s perceived dysregulated sexual behavior is an attempt to solve an issue with deeper roots. Braun-Harvey explains how erotic conflicts arise in relationships—and how to work through them. He also makes a case for reframing pornography: Let’s start by calling it sexual imagery, he says. Ultimately, his work lies in helping men express themselves sexually in a way that doesn’t feel out of control and that allows them to keep their agreements with themselves and others.

“Therapists and Sexual Health” Sex Talk with Erica

Doug Braun-Harvey is an expert in the field around sexual health and psychotherapy. We talk about how helpers can initiate the discussion around sexuality. Because people are whole beings, not just the issue where they go see a therapist for help. We talk about “feeling icky” and how professionals can challenge those feelings.

Education of mental health therapists often lack a sexual health or sexuality training. Our culture portrays therapists, in movies or TV, as being inappropriate when sex is brought up. The United States in particular poor at sexuality training, even many medical doctors may only have 4 hours of training around the parts of us that keep humanity around!

When uncomfortable people are not challenged on their discomfort, they can impact the discussion using authenticity. Helpers can impact the conversation with their words and help steer it to a healthy place.
